What it looks for rubric v1
| Work is the right way up | seen | A session can be pedagogically perfect and worthless if the student spends it reading upside down. Seen in the wild: a 25-minute session delivered at 180 degrees. | |
| Writing is legible at video size | seen |
camera The recording is the student's only view. Handwriting that is fine on the page can be unreadable at 960x540.
board A board removes the camera's problems but not this one: nothing stops a tutor writing in a corner at a size the student has to squint at, or in a colour that barely separates from the canvas.
|
|
| The work fills the frame | seen | Wasted frame is wasted resolution. | |
| The camera holds still not counted | measured | A shot that moves every minute costs the student their place each time. | |
| Exposure is usable not counted | measured | Cheap to fix, and invisible to the tutor, who is looking at the paper rather than the video. | |
| Nothing distracting in shot | seen | Clutter in frame is both a distraction and a signal about how seriously the setup is taken. | |
| The student's problem is established | seen | A session that begins mid-working leaves the student unable to tell whether the tutor understood what they asked. | |
| Work proceeds in followable steps | seen |
camera This is the difference between watching someone solve a problem and being taught to solve one.
board Same distinction, different failure: on paper work is lost when the page moves, on a board it is lost only when the tutor wipes it — and wiping it while the student is still reading is a choice, not an accident.
|
|
| It reaches an answer | seen | An unfinished session is the most common thing a student rates badly, and it is visible without any audio. | |
| Something was actually written | measured | A board that never fills is the clearest possible failure and needs no interpretation. One real session ran 60 seconds, billed nothing, and ended with the student's question sitting alone on an otherwise empty canvas. | |
| The concept is named before the working | heard | Naming it is what makes the session transferable to the next question. Without it the student has watched one problem get solved and learned nothing they can reuse. | |
| Explained rather than jumped to the answer | heard | Jumping straight to the answer is the single most common way a session is technically correct and pedagogically worthless. | |
| Understanding of the concept is checked not counted | heard | The weakest link in this rubric and worth being honest about: the transcript has no speaker labels, so the asking can be seen and the answering usually cannot. | |
| Solved step by step, not in one leap | heard | A student can copy a result from either, and only learn from one. | |
| The session opens properly | heard | Sets whether the student believes they were understood. | |
| No long dead air | measured | Long gaps are where a student leaves. |
measured is computed from the file and reproducible · seen needs a model to look at frames · heard needs the words and is skipped without a transcript.
